Songs I Heard This Week (Winter)
As a person who is always looking for a song to capture a moment, I love making mixes with various themes, including each season. Whether you love winter, hate it, or wish you lived in an area that got a bit of snow once in a while, here is a selection of tracks from my Winter playlist that will surely make these cold months a little more pleasing.
The wind blowing, the guitar, the harmonica, the melody, and vocal harmonies all perfectly encapsulate the bleakness of winter.
Such a great song, though not at all like a typical Simon & Garfunkel track. Gone are the soft vocals and stripped-down production, but it is no less effective. The Bangles also did a worthy cover, which was featured in the movie Less Than Zero.
This is where I fell in love with Zoe Johnston’s cool vocals. Achingly beautiful when she sings, “Choirs of winter, birds are calling to me…”
From The Ocean Blue’s debut album, this is a peppy perspective on a typical winter day.
From the album American Pie, this takes on an optimistic tone as he sings, “The birds like leaves on winterwood sing hopeful songs on dismal days.” What beautiful imagery! But that’s love for ya. I also really enjoy Olivia Newton-John’s version.
Karolina Komstedt has the sweetest vocals in pop music. You actually believe her when she sings, “Let’s all hope for winter. Winter cools us down. The brightness of springtime makes you, makes me feel down.”
And I suppose I’d be remiss if I didn’t add my own odes to those frigid winter days. Here is Winter from the album, Seasons. And Winterfire, which will be on my upcoming album, Unconventional.
