Songs I Heard This Week (8/4/17)
Not sure why this video still is of the album, Home Free. These songs come from “NetherLands”, an incredibly underrated album and one of Dan’s best! Glad someone put these two tracks together because I was having a tough time deciding which one to select. Was listening to this album on the turntable this week and reflecting how much I truly miss Dan Fogelberg. He was a rare breed indeed. He wrote and sang from the heart in a way that even the best singer/songwriters can’t quite capture. I had the honor of seeing him perform live many years ago, and despite his vocals being pretty shot that night, he still managed to bring me to tears the entire show. I loved hearing the backstories of each song, as it made them that much more real and raw.
“You’re the windsurfer crossing the ocean, I’m the boat behind”. Nifty little lyrics like this just add to the charm of Kings of Convenience. They are jangle pop at its best. I honestly don’t think they know how to make a bad song. Perfect for a drive on a beautiful summer day.
Don’t you just love when you’re walking through a store and suddenly overhear something divine? When that happens I never fail to stop in my tracks and pull out my SoundHound app. I’ve discovered some of my favorite new music that way. This one proved to be as good as it seemed on those crappy speakers. It has my name written all over it.
Discovered this one playing on the overhead at a restaurant. The retro vibe and laidback feel caught my attention. Great melody and cool lyrics, definitely has that throwback soul sound of the late 70s and early 80s, as do the other Sam Padrul tracks I’ve sampled since.
Creepy bitspeek vocal effects and ominous 80s synth-wave music, but the lyrics is where the true darkness is found. This song perfectly depicts a feeling of loneliness and despair in how isolated a person can be even when surrounded by millions of people. It then transitions into an instrumental called “Lonely City”. The Midnight is basically my new music obsession.
