Songs I Heard This Week (8/25/17)
This is it for me at the moment. That stellar bass line, Jim James’ soaring vocals, the psychedelic whistling at the end, and this line…”You know my heart it beats for you. It beats for you so in time we beat. Your thoughts align so in time with me.”
This comes from the new Elbow album, “Little Fictions”. Guy Garvey could sing the phone book, but I was immediately drawn to the tribal beats as well. Been following Elbow since their first album in the late 90s and they are still going strong with this latest release! I found the official video to be a bit distracting from the beautiful music, but check it out on YouTube if you feel so inclined. And be sure to keep an eye out for the Benedict Cumberbatch cameo!
I featured the song “Mechanical Sparrow” by Atella in my last post, but as I dug a little deeper into their limited catalog, I also came across this gem. Definitely reminds me of Delerium, and the unique vocals of Frøder are reminiscent of Leigh Nash from Sixpence None The Richer. It compelled me to look further into her work as well, which I also enjoyed and highly recommend.
One of my all-time favorite Bee Gees songs, “Wildflower” can be found on their post-disco album, “Living Eyes”. Maurice Gibb was rarely featured on Bee Gees albums, but whenever he was, he always made an impact. His smooth, sweet vocals are quite affecting, and that’s certainly true here. I particularly love the line, “If older is wise, one look in your eyes, I’m younger than I should be”. I had such a hard time when he passed unexpectedly that it’s still bittersweet to hear his songs.
Growing up in the 90s exposed me to one of the greatest sketch comedy shows of all time, Kids In The Halls. It was edgy, obscure and before its time. I guess I’ve always been drawn to abstract humor, and lately, I’ve been revisiting a lot of my favorite skits, but who could forget their amazing intro music? As one who enjoys surf rock, I find it great in its own right and therefore seemed worthy of sharing just as summer is coming to a close.
