Songs I Heard This Week (10/6/17)
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the passing of legendary rock singer/songwriter Tom Petty, who died earlier this week after suffering cardiac arrest. His passing is a major loss to the music industry. This is my favorite Tom Petty song and video, as it had such a profound effect on me as a kid. I would watch it in awe, it even disturbed me in a lot of ways, but also contributed to my love for all things Alice. I think it perfectly showcases the uneasiness of that story, where there is always an element of danger because you can’t predict how other’s will behave. We’re all mad here…
Latest single by The Midnight, one of my new favorite bands. The timing of its release is perfectly suited for this time of year, as the lyrics contain a creepy twist, reminding us of the deception beauty can bring. I guess that’s one of the things I like about them. While they play heavy on the 80s nostalgia factor, many of their lyrics have an unsettling quality. This will appear on their upcoming album, “Nocturnal”, which should be out later this month.
The lovely, smooth vocal stylings of Nat King Cole. He was a real class act and his music continues to touch future generations. This time of year I always pull out my seasonal music, which includes the standard “Autumn Leaves”, and while it’s been covered countless times, still no one does it quite like Nat. It is the equivalence to his version of “A Christmas Song” during the Christmas season.
Well, we’re well into October now, and here is another seasonal favorite of mine. I love just about anything the Pet Shop Boys release, but this is particularly apropos for this time of year. It manages to perfectly capture the sweet melancholy of the season. I’ve never been able to fully comprehend what the song is about, but it’s got great atmosphere.
Had this playing a couple days ago during a particular misty morning. It just fit my dreamy mood of the moment. A sweet and sensual song about true intimacy. Doesn’t have to even be sexual, but as simple as a touch, a kiss, a look. Like it’s just the two of you and time has stood still. I may be a bit of a romantic though.
