Head Toward the Storm!
I heard a great analogy that I thought might help someone. The person was an expert in grief who had also worked with buffalo and shared how when a storm is coming, buffalo move toward the storm because they instinctively know that doing so will make that storm pass more quickly. But we, as humans, often try to run away from the storm, prolonging it as it continuously hovers over us.
I think many people struggle to sit with their grief. They either do so to avoid the pain or to avoid the shame. Perhaps they never learned to cope with the past or perhaps they have been made to believe that their grief didn’t matter compared to someone else’s. But the grief you feel will only linger and consume you if you don’t head into the storm and deal with it head-on.
Don’t be afraid to accept the grief you are currently experiencing or is lingering in the back of your heart and mind. It’s okay to work through it because once it’s behind you, it will better equip you to help others going through the same thing. And that’s the thing with pain and grief, it can consume us, or it can be redeemed for good. Don’t let it go to waste, head toward the storm so you can get through it and come out the other side!
