Early Winter
There’s something special about early winter. Sure, it can be bleak at times, but there are so many things about it that fill me with joy! The snow has not yet accumulated much and the temperatures have not yet dipped into the lower digits. The air smells fresh and clean. It’s a great time to bundle up and take a short hike because the path is still relatively clear. The water on the lakes and rivers have not yet frozen over, so the ducks and geese are still milling around against a snowy backdrop. Occasionally on your walk, you may even come across a couple of true believers who are still fishing in the creek in their waders. Sometimes they wave hello and sometimes they don’t even acknowledge your presence because to them it’s just another day doing what they love.
In the evening it’s a true joy to walk about town and enjoy the beautifully dressed windows with their soft twinkling lights. The town tree is the crowning glory, larger than life and beaming with pride. Perhaps you will hear the sound of Salvation Army bell ringers or the clip-clop of hooves from a horse and carriage. You may even catch a few notes of festive music playing inside each store as customers enter and exit or perhaps catch a warm draft and the smell of cinnamon from scented candles and potpourri. And is there anything cozier than walking into your favorite eatery, the walls draped in fresh greens and Christmas lights, watching shoppers pass by the windows as you settle down for a warm meal?
But the best part of early winter is being home, all cozy in slippers and wrapped in a throw, watching the snow lightly fall outside your window, sipping coffee from your favorite mug and filled with delight as you bask in the glow of the fireplace. Christmas carols playing softly as you admire the handiwork of your holiday decor, adorned with beloved ornaments that contain precious memories or display your unique sense of style. The smell of a home cooked meal permeating the house or freshly baked cookies. And family and friends traveling from far and near to gather in celebration of this glorious season and create newfound memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s to enjoying every season of life, including this early wintertime!
