Songs I Heard: Sailorsongs Pt. 4
Welcome to Part 4 of Sailorsongs, the final installment in this series as we count down the weeks in the final month of Summer! I have decided to send her off in the best way I know how…through song. I have a fascination with the sea and a with sailing in particular. I have written songs about it, poems, and even a book. I consider it the very embodiment of mystery, adventure, and romance. I also love building themed playlists to fit various moods and was recently inspired to create one called, Sailorsongs. To help relish these last weeks of the season, I will be posting a four-part series featuring some of my favorite songs that speak to the heart of every seafaring adventurer. So, get ready to set sail… ⛵
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale’s tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down low (huh)
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We’ll take our leave and go
I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters
Uninspired, drenched and tired
Wail on, wail on, sailor
There are seagulls in the morning here
I watch them search and soar
As they dive to take the fishes that swim just
Just beyond the shore
Then they fly off in the distance
‘Til they finally fade from view
And somehow they remind me so of you
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too
T’was the witch of November come stealin’
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashin’
When afternoon came it was freezin’ rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind
Well, that’s a wrap, but to cap off this 4-week series I thought I would conclude with my own personal inclusion to this list, Be Gone, a live recording from the album, Acoustic…
Lost by the ocean shore
You wanting so much more
I gave all that I had to give
Breaking down this life I live
Sitting here with a frozen stare
Cool sea wind blowing through our hair
Your bold hands reaching out to me
This was never meant to be
Don’t try, just say goodbye
