Songs I Heard: Sailorsongs Pt. 1
It’s August and summer will soon come to a close, but before we say bon voyage, I have decided to send her off in the best way I know how…through song. I have a fascination with the sea and a with sailing in particular. I have written songs about it, poems, and even a book. I consider it the very embodiment of mystery, adventure, and romance. I also love building themed playlists to fit various moods and was recently inspired to create one called, Sailorsongs. To help relish these last weeks of the season, I will be posting a four-part series featuring some of my favorite songs that speak to the heart of every seafaring adventurer. So, get ready to set sail… ⛵
Well, it’s not far back to sanity
At least it’s not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see, really, believe me
Hark now, hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly
Into the mystic
To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean
To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and the living
In search of the answers to the questions unknown
To be part of the movement, part of the growing
Part of beginning to understand
So I’m sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a dyin’
And my love is an anchor tied to you tied with a silver chain
I have my ship and all her flags are a’ flyin’
She is all that I have left and music is her name
Sail away, sail away, sail away
From Bissau to Palau, in the shade of Avalon
From Fiji to Tyree and the Isles of Ebony
From Peru to Cebu, hear the power of Babylon
From Bali to Cali, far beneath the Coral Sea
I would be remiss if I didn’t include one of my own Sailorsongs — Summer, from the album, Seasons…
I’m sailing onward
As diamonds seem to lead the way
On this crystal bay
All new horizons
Stretch out before me on display
Goodbye yesterday
That’s all for now, be sure to check back next week for Part Two!!!
