Reflections: Deep Blue Sea
Deep Blue Sea has a meaning that is two-fold. First it was inspired by the experience of my husband and I as we planned to move across the country from Michigan to San Diego. It was something we talked about from the time we met, yet years were passing by and the likelihood of that move happening was seeming less and less likely. That is until we determined to make it happen, no matter the obstacle. We prayed about it, but also planned extensively.
Along the way we were occasionally met with pessimists and naysayers. We refused to let that discourage us, and took the bold step of walking away from everything. Our home, job, material possessions…and of course friends and family. All in the name of following our dreams, in hopes of seeking a better life. One I hoped to pass on to other loved ones who also felt a longing for a different life experience.
The sea is a symbol of that adventure and freedom. The idea of exploring a new world, never knowing what’s beyond the horizon. I guess you could say I am a sailor at heart. Being near the water is vital to my existence.
The second part of the meaning to this song is a longing for heaven. A willingness to push past the culture, the negativity, the silencers that would repress a desire for ultimate holiness. To walk the narrow path that leads to life, past the pearly gates, onto the streets of gold and into my ultimate destiny. To live in the presence of the God of the Universe. There is no greater adventure than that!
One final note, although it was unintended when I wrote the lyrics, this song also brings to mind The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from The Chronicles of Narnia. I absolutely adore the series and am a big fan of C.S. Lewis in general. It is packed with all kinds of spiritual symbolism, but on the surface is just a good adventure on the high seas!
Deep Blue Sea
Lyrics by Jakki JeleneWe intend to go
We intend to see
Places in our dreams
Where we long to beIt seems so out of touch
To those who have no vision
But nothing’s what it seems
There’s no certaintySailing high on white capped waves
Above the salty brine
We’re traveling upon the deep blue sea
Deep blue sea
Deep blue seaWe’ll close our eyes tonight
And leave behind reality
Like wings we’re taking flight
To another worldA land yet unexplored
That no one can imagine
But when we come ashore
We will surely seeSailing high on white capped waves
Above the salty brine
We’re traveling upon the deep blue sea
Deep blue sea
Deep blue sea
